Murakaza Neza, Rwanda
The land of a thousand Hills
Rwanda is buzzing at the moment. The negative energy from its tragic past has been harnessed into something special where the whole population is thriving to build a better country for all. This has resulted in Rwanda becoming one of the cleanest and safest countries in the world. The government also sees the great value derived from its tourism sector and has partnered with various entities such as African Parks to uplift national parks and surrounding communities.
The turnaround has been incredible and now a destination known predominantly for its Mountain Gorillas has become so much more. Both Nyungwe Forest National Park and Akagera National Parks are highly sought-after destinations while Lake Kivu on the western side of the country offers beach resort options popular with tourists from far and wide.
Mountain Gorillas still remain top of the list but the Golden monkey experience is also highly recommended. In fact, if you love primates then you have to head off to Nyungwe with its great primate diversity such as Chimpanzees, Mountain Monkeys, Mona Monkeys, Silver monkeys and more. Akagera is a real gem of a reserve renowned for its Big 5 and ties in well to make an excellent 10-day safari with Nyungwe and then Volcanoes National Park for the gorillas.
If you come to Africa once in your life and are preparing the dream safari - I suggest Rwanda for the primates and tie it in with a Kenya or Tanzania safari. If you want to get to know the country intimately you could easily spend two weeks comfortably travelling around.
Best time to visit:
It can rain anywhere in Rwanda at any time but typically the driest months are from May - September. There is a short rainy season in November and the bigger rainy season in February-March. It is best to do morning activities because a bright blue sunny day can quickly turn into a downpour by the afternoon.
